Monkey Cake

This was a lucky little boys' 1st Birthday cake.  The theme was...obviously...monkeys.

The cupcake on top was intended to be for the birthday boy, so it's done in buttercream instead of fondant.

USS Enterprise Cake

I am more of a Star WARS fan, but I have a healthy appreciation for Star Trek as well.

So when I had a request for an Enterprise cake, I was all over that!!!

This was so much more challenging than I thought it would be, but I had a great time trying to figure it out.

Owl Insta-Cake

This owl cake is different than all other owl cakes in that it is an insta-cake.

The entire top is one fondant piece, the dots are fondant, and the owl is a fondant covered styrofoam ball.  It can be shipped as a set anywhere in the world!!!

iCake

Before you say it, I KNOW I put it on backwards.

But that's not the interesting thing about this cake.

I get asked all the time if I ever make my own fondant.  The answer is no...

(made it a few times many years ago, didn't like it, end of story).

Anywho, there is a young man who made some marshmallow fondant (different than the kind I used to make) and wanted a cake decrated with it.  So I told him I would do it if he supplied me with some of his fondant.

Well, I won't be making any more cakes with marshmallow fondant.  I don't care what it tastes like, it is a beast to work with.

Zombie Cake

My son's birthday is the week before Halloween...not that his cake choice would have been any different otherwise.

He asked for a zombie cake.  He isn't a big fan on fondant (neither am I, honestly) which was perfect for this cake.

I just frosted a normal cake and put cookie crumbs on top for dirt.

Then I made a (half) zombie head and two hands out of fondant.

Then I made three hil-ar-ious tombstones, also out of fondant.

The final touch is the bones "underground".

Alice in Wonderland Cake

Oh why, oh why can't my kids want fun themes like this for their birthday partys?!?

Luckily, I have a friend with really cool kids who like the
really fun obscure things that are great to make cakes of.

For example...

I have done topsy-turvy cakes before, but never the "right" way.

There is a little, very obvious, trick that I used.  It's very effective and very, very, very time consuming.

It should not slide, anyway.  So that's good.

Too much fun to do (and a whole lof of wor..zzzz).

Baby Jack.

Jack's blessing outfit had the most darling little blue train on the front of it,
so I put it on the cake too!!!

Monster High Cake

Six years ago today my beautiful baby girl was born bringing sunshine and the biggest smile ever into the world.

Now her favorite thing is Monster High.  Not sure what happened there.

I was really happy to have an excuse to try argyle.  I really liked how it turned out too.

Happy birthday Natty Kat!!!

Simple and Elegant Baby Shower Cake

After what seems like forever, I finally did another cake today.

To be honest I was just too busy even to do my own daughters birthday cake.  No matter, she did a spectacular job decorating it herself.

So it felt really good to get back in the groove and do a real cake.

This one employs the embossing technique.  That is where you roll out the fondant, then roll it again over an embossing sheet with the pattern on it.

I've used this method before to cover a cake, but I decided to take it one step further and emboss the ribbon and bow as well.

I actually liked the pattern more on the ribbon than on the actual cake.  I think next time I will just do the trim and leave the rest alone.
