Orange and Blue Summer

When I picked out my wedding colors, I have to admit that I was very unimaginative. I chose lavender and light blue. I don't regret it, but if I coudl do it all over, I would be much bolder.

Such is this bride-to-be. Her colors are orange, light blue, and purple. I would never have put those colors together myself, but it works.

This is a wedding SHOWER cake only, that's why it's so small.

I really really wanted to do the white on white hearts and I'm so glad I was given permission to.

Oh yeah, I also did cupcake toppers for the cupcakes.

Button, Button, Who's Got The Button

The lesson for this week is on fondant bow cake toppers. It's done a LOT out there in cake world and I have just never gotten around to making one. It's one of those things that seemed so easy that I never bothered.

Weeeeell, turns out they're a little more than they seem. The cake I was doing this weekend needed a little something on top, so I gave it a try.

Wow, that sucked!!! Do you see all the gooey glue stuff in the middle there? Well, you shouldn't. 18 hours to pick-up and counting, and now I have to start all over again.

Much better.

This one is for a baby shower and all I was given was that they wanted blue, green and brown. So here's what I came up with.

Those are buttons on there.

Toothless

My little 2, soon-to-be-3, year old daughter is obsessed with How to Train Your Dragon. I can't blame her, it's one of my favorite movies too. It's to the point where my girl won't go anywhere without the movie case clutched in her little hands.

So it follows that I would make her a Toothless cake for her birthday.

If you can't tell, that is a fish in his mouth.

Of course I did something new on this cake as well. The Toothless figure is made with an inner "skeleton" made of tin foil, then covered with fondant. This makes the overall dragon lighter, and thus able to be supported by the fondant legs.

Note the characteristic 1-sided tail fin.

This was also the first cake that I have used fondant to cover the cake board itself.

I am incredibly pleased with how this one turned out.

Hello Kitty

One of my fondest memories growing up was going to the mall on Saturday's with my best friend Regina. My favorite store there (at least until I got too cool for it) was the Sanrio store. We would buy pencils, buttons, bracelets, and I even had a darling stationary set that I kept until last year (I finally threw it out in a spring cleaning). I LOVED HELLO KITTY.

I was thrilled when asked to do this cake. It was very nostalgic.

I know it looks washed out with the white board, but I didn't want to put it on a pink board because, believe it or not, this cake is for a man...that's what I said.

It is actually for his graduation so I added a graduation cap and tassle for the finishing touch.

If you love Hello Kitty to and do not live where you can get one of my cakes, here are my other Hello Kitty options that can be purchased through my etsy shop.

Butterflies

I feel conflicted about posting this cake because there is nothing too special about it. I was testing a new flavor and didn't want to fondant it, so I "just" slathered it in super-chocolatey frosting.

The reason I did post it was because I wanted to test the butterflies...my nemesis. I have done chocolate butterflies several times and I'm never really satisfied with the results, so I went with fondant and tried again.

Eh, I don't know. It probably needs a few more runs before they are perfected, but I like them much more than the chocolate ones.
